Summer Safety Tips

Summer Safety Tips for Parents of Young Children

Summer is a magical time for young children – filled with sunshine, outdoor play, pool days, and family adventures. But with all the fun comes extra responsibility to ensure your child stays safe and healthy.

Whether you’re headed to the park, beach, or simply playing in the backyard, here are some important summer safety tips to keep in mind.

1. Sun Safety: Protect That Precious Skin

Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every two hours – more often if swimming or sweating.

Choose lightweight, UV-protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses. Avoid peak sun hours (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.) and play in shaded areas.

2. Hydration: Keep the Sips Coming

Offer water frequently – even before your child says they’re thirsty. Include hydrating snacks like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges. Avoid sugary drinks and juices.

3. Water Safety: Supervision is Key

Always provide active supervision around any water. Enroll in child swim classes if available, but remember: swimming skills don’t replace watchful eyes. Empty kiddie pools and buckets after use.

4. Bug Safety: Keep the Bites Away

Use child-safe insect repellent (with no more than 30% DEET). Bathe your child after using repellent. Dress in light-colored long sleeves and pants in wooded areas.

5. Playground Safety: Hot Surfaces & Supervision

Touch test surfaces before play – slides and swings can get dangerously hot. Supervise climbing and jumping to prevent falls. Keep a small first-aid kit handy.

6. Car Safety: Never Leave a Child Unattended

Never leave your child in a parked car – it can become dangerously hot within minutes. Use reminders like putting a personal item in the back seat with your child. Always check the seat temperature.

7. Know the Signs of Heat Illness

Watch for fatigue, dizziness, headache, red or damp skin, and rapid breathing. Move your child to a cool place, give water, and seek medical help if needed.

Summer is a time to make beautiful memories with your little ones. With a few simple precautions, you can help ensure that every sunny day is filled with smiles, not scrapes. From sunscreen and hydration to bug spray and supervision, summer safety is all about being proactive, prepared, and present.

Have a safe and joyful summer!
