Fall is here! With cooler temperatures, busy holiday schedules, and more time spent indoors, it’s the perfect season to focus on keeping children healthy and happy. At First Discovery, we’re committed to supporting families in building healthy habits. Here are some simple tips to help your family stay well this fall:
Wash Hands Often:
Fall is prime time for colds and sniffles. Encourage children to wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after playing outside, before eating, and after sneezing or coughing. We encourage our parents to help your children wash their hands before or upon entering the classroom during drop off.
Boost Nutrition:
Did you know adding fruits and veggies into meals and snacks helps support children’s immune systems? Seasonal produce like apples, pumpkins, carrots, and sweet potatoes are delicious and full of vitamins to help build a strong immune system.
Stick to Routines:
While the days are getting shorter and schedules are filling up with holiday festivities, keeping a regular bedtime schedule and routine helps children feel secure and well rested. A consistent sleep schedule helps boost their overall health.
Dress for the Weather:
As we know, Virginia weather is unpredictable. Layer your child’s clothing so they stay comfortable in and outdoors. In the mornings they may need jackets and hats, and by the afternoon they’re taking them off. Be prepared for any Virginia weather inconsistencies.
Keep Allergies & Germs in Mind:
Seasonal pollen isn’t just for springtime, when the leaves start to fall, the pollen and allergens can trigger seasonal allergies. By keeping tissues nearby, reminding your child to sneeze or cough into their elbow, and resting at home if your child feels unwell, spreading germs to others can be prevented.
Stay Active Outdoors:
Enjoy the crisp fall weather by getting some fresh air and exercise to keep kid’s energy up and support healthy growth.
Healthy habits in the fall set the tone for the whole school year. With good nutrition, rest, hygiene, and plenty of outdoor play, families can enjoy all the joyful fall moments while keeping little ones happy and healthy. A healthy child is a happy learner!
