Water Safety Starts with Us: Protecting Children Around Water This Summer

As temperatures rise and families spend more time outdoors, water activities become a favorite way to stay cool and have fun. Whether it’s a day at the beach, an afternoon at the pool, or even playing in a backyard sprinkler, water safety should always be a top priority. At First Discovery Academy, we believe that keeping children safe starts with education, preparation, and active supervision. Drowning can happen quickly and quietly, making it essential for parents and caregivers to remain vigilant anytime children are near water.

The Importance of Active Supervision

One of the most effective ways to prevent water-related accidents is active supervision. This means giving children your full attention while they are in or around water. Avoid distractions such as cell phones, conversations, or household tasks that can take your focus away, even for a moment. Designate a responsible adult as the “Water Watcher” whenever children are swimming or playing near water. This person should remain focused solely on supervising the children.

Swimming Lessons Save Lives

Swimming is an important life skill that can help reduce the risk of drowning. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends swim lessons as an additional layer of protection for many children.

When choosing a swim program, look for lessons that teach:

  • Basic water safety rules
  • Floating and treading water
  • Entering and exiting water safely
  • What to do in an emergency

Remember that swim lessons do not replace adult supervision.

Pool Safety Tips Every Family Should Follow

If your family has access to a pool, consider these important safety measures:

  • Install a four-sided fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate.
  • Remove toys from the pool area when not in use.
  • Keep rescue equipment and a phone nearby.
  • Learn CPR and basic first aid.
  • Never allow children to swim alone.

Layers of protection help create a safer environment for everyone.

Water Safety Beyond the Pool

Many people think only of swimming pools when discussing water safety, but children can be at risk around any body of water, including:

  • Bathtubs
  • Lakes and ponds
  • Beaches
  • Water parks
  • Buckets and kiddie pools

Always empty small pools and water containers after use, and never leave young children unattended in the bathtub.

Life Jackets Matter

When boating, fishing, or spending time near open water, children should wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Water wings and inflatable toys are not safety devices and should never be relied upon as a substitute for life jackets or supervision.

Teaching Children Healthy Water Habits

Parents can help children develop safe habits by teaching them:

  • Always ask permission before going near water.
  • Never run around pools or wet surfaces.
  • Swim with a buddy.
  • Follow pool and beach safety rules.
  • Listen to lifeguards and trusted adults.

The earlier children learn these habits, the more likely they are to practice them throughout their lives

A Safe Summer Is a Fun Summer

Summer memories are often made around water. By staying alert, teaching water safety skills, and maintaining close supervision, families can enjoy all the fun that pools, beaches, and water activities have to offer while helping keep children safe.

At First Discovery Academy, we’re committed to partnering with families to promote healthy, safe, and happy childhood experiences. We encourage all families to take a few moments this summer to review water safety practices and make them part of their seasonal routine.

Stay safe, stay cool, and enjoy your summer!
