February Is Children’s Dental Health Month 🦷

February is Children’s Dental Health Month, a perfect time to focus on the importance of healthy smiles and lifelong dental habits for young children. At First Discovery, we know that caring for children goes beyond learning and play, it also includes helping families build strong health routines from the very beginning.

Why Dental Care Matters for Children

Good oral health starts early. Baby teeth play a big role in a child’s development, they help with chewing, speech, and holding space for permanent teeth. When dental care is overlooked, children may experience cavities, pain, infections, or difficulty eating and concentrating.

  • Establishing healthy dental habits early helps:
  • Prevent tooth decay and gum disease
  • Build confidence with healthy smiles
  • Create positive routines that last into adulthood
  • Reduce fear and anxiety around dental visits

Age-Specific Dental Care Tips

👶 Infants (0–12 months)

  • Gently clean gums daily using a soft, damp washcloth.
  • When the first tooth appears, begin brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Avoid putting babies to bed with bottles containing milk or juice.
  • Schedule the first dental visit by age one or when the first tooth erupts.

🚼 Toddlers (1–3 years)

  • Brush twice daily using a rice-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
  • Let toddlers practice brushing, but always assist to ensure teeth are cleaned properly.
  • Encourage drinking water instead of sugary drinks.
  • Start teaching children to spit out toothpaste (without rinsing with lots of water).

🧒 Preschoolers (3–5 years)

  • Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
  • Help children brush for two minutes, twice a day.
  • Introduce flossing once teeth begin to touch.
  • Talk positively about dentist visits to help reduce fear or anxiety.

🎒 School-Age Children (6+ years)

  • Encourage independence with brushing while continuing to supervise.
  • Brush and floss daily to protect newly emerging permanent teeth.
  • Discuss the importance of limiting sugary snacks and drinks.
  • Keep up with regular dental checkups and cleanings.

Making Dental Care Fun

At First Discovery, we encourage positive conversations about dental health. Reading books about brushing, role-playing dentist visits, singing brushing songs, and celebrating healthy habits can help children feel confident and excited about caring for their teeth.

This February, let’s work together to build strong, healthy smiles that last a lifetime. 💙

Happy Children’s Dental Health Month from all of us at First Discovery!
